This is a picture I took of my two year old neice, Pepin Aune. I was amazed in class when I found out that you can also read a work of art. I have been critiquing and analyzing works of art my whole life, but I never thought about it in the terms of literacy. For the past year I have been doing weekly art activities with Pepin. When we are finished we always discuss what we have made and if we like it or not. It amazes me; teaching her new things and watching as she is listening, thinking, responding and watching my social cues.

  1. What a cool Aunt!! Teaching a child how to read a work of art at such a young age is a really wonderful idea. I like how she is able to discuss what she has created and is learning how to verbalize her opinions on her work. I think being able to read art critically is something not many people know how to do (certainly not me!). Giving a young child practice in reading art will allow him or her to think more in depth about what he or she sees everyday.

  2. I meant to comment on this one a while ago. I love the idea of using art at such a young age. It will teach her to appreciate art because so many people do not. For her to be able to read a peice of art and communicate that to you is allowing her to learn how to think critically...wonderful skill for when she gets older!
