This is a picture of the bulletin board at the dance studio where I work. It is an example of how people can read to gain important information, such as, when the studio is open/closed and when tuition is due. It is also a place where people can learn about performers in the field who will be visiting the studio and giving master classes. The times of these events are listed on the board as well. I thought it was a easy and effective way to ensure that people are getting the information they need to. People also learn to read the bulletin board so they are up-to-date on the latest news at the studio.

  1. Your photo reminded me that we need to talk about efferent and aesthetic readings. I'll bring it up in our next class. Basically, we can say that people read for two reasons--for enjoyment and for information.

Can you think of a time when you've read for both reasons?

  2. o I like how visually pleasing the bulletin board is. Here, I almost feel that there are two sets of information. Like Dr. K said, I get pleasure out of "reading" the pictures and the dancer's costume, but I also get the information needed with the calendar and other writings. I think it's cool that the aesthetic value of this bulletin board could initially attract you, but you would value the board for the information presented. Nice mix!

  3. I never thought of a bulletin board as place to show literacy but I see how it works. Bulletin boards are used in many different places and the content on them is unique to the environment but the purpose of them is the same, to get out information to people. Bulletin boards are a place to communicate with a wide range of viewers. I always find that when I see a bulletin board I tend to take a minute and look at it because there might be information that would be valuable for me to know.
